Joan Francesc Mira has excelled as a researcher, teacher and writer. In this latter aspect, three of his works related with the city of Valencia have become an important milestone on the path towards his being considered one of the most highly regarded in the Catalan literary scenario. The subject of his works has nearly always dealt with Valencian life. From El bou de foc (The Fire Bull; 1974) to Els cucs de seda (The Silkworms; 1975) and El desig dels dies (The Desire of the Days; 1981), the local references are a constantly recurring theme. With regard to the city of Valencia itself, however, Els treballs perduts (The Lost Works; 1989), Purgatori (Purgatory; 2002) and El professor d'història (The History Teacher; 2008) are works that take the urban context as the environmental thread around which the events in the stories revolve. They are not focused on the setting itself but instead are stories where the city is the backdrop on which the characters' actions and thoughts are suspended. [-]
