Alegoría de un western romántico : Johnny Guitar (1954) de Nicholas Ray

Abstract

Johnny Guitar es una película hipnótica y fascinante, pese –o tal vez por ello- a su articulación narrativa dislocada y a los secretos que se guardan en ella. Desde mis inicios universitarios –que fue cuando la conocí- hasta el día de hoy, cada vez que he tenido ocasión de volverla a ver siempre he encontrado elementos de sugestión y de sorpresa ante el torbellino de imágenes que discurren en ella con inusitada intensidad. Siempre he tenido la sensación de encontrarme ante un filme con un pulso nervioso y desbocado, pero también impregnado de una atmósfera onírica bajo el aliento de un tono poético. En ella no existen los tiempos muertos pues cuando inician su desarrollo quedan súbitamente interrumpidos con el fin de evitar algún respiro en el relato. Simultáneamente a este efecto dramático impetuoso y vehemente confluyen otros atributos magnéticos de esta película: la luminosa y colorista fotografía, la puesta en escena abstracta y telúrica, la enorme violencia interior que proyectan sus personajes, así como la subversión de las convenciones del género la cual propicia que la figura de la mujer se erija en heroína estelar de la narración. Todo esto, sumado a la naturaleza alegórica que formula su discurso contra el maccarthismo, apunta hacia una propuesta completamente alejada de los contenidos ideológicos propugnados por la institución conservadora de Hollywood

Johnny Guitar is a fascinating, mesmerising film, in spite of – or perhaps due to – its disjointed narrative and the secrets concealed within it. Since my early days at university – which is when I first saw it – up until today, every time I watch it again I always find suggestive elements that surprise me with a whirlpool of images that run through the film with uncommon intensity. I have always felt that it was a film with a nervy, racing pulse, but at the same time it was steeped in an all-pervading dreamy atmosphere beneath a poetic sky. It has no dead times because the moment they are about to start they are suddenly quashed so as to prevent there being any chance of a respite occurring in the story. While this impetuous, vehement dramatic effect is being developed, other alluring attributes of the film are also put on show: the bright, vividly-coloured photography, the abstract telluric staging, the immense inner violence projected by its characters, as well as the subversion of the convention of genre, which leads to the figure of a woman becoming the female protagonist of the story. All this, together with the allegoric nature formulated by its discourse against McCarthyism, points towards a proposal that is a far cry from the ideological contents defended by the conservative institution of Hollywood.
