What is swing? So much has been written about this word since a few black people started to play and dance to this music back in the early 20th century, but what does it really mean? In the slang used by Spanish jazz musicians, in some cases the word "gallego" is used to refer disparagingly to a musician who tries to play jazz but, due to a lack of criterion, knowledge or practice, does not play with swing. Although both the educational authorities and conservatories of music are beginning to implement – albeit very slowly in some cases – jazz studies as a higher level specialisation, the two worlds, i.e. musicians with a classical training and those trained in jazz, still fail to understand each other. This article has an educational purpose and aims to explain the major aspects of the most typical phrasing of jazz: swing. [-]
