| ca_CA |
dc.description.abstract | The aim of the Romanization process in Spanish-American national churches, during the pontificates of Pius IX and Leo XIII, was to rearrange their own structures, weighing the authority of the Roman hierarchy and the papacy against the power exercised by the national clergy. This provoked major fractures and polarizations within the Mexican Church, thus creating two well-defined factions, Romans vs. Local. These two groups fought for the hegemony of the political power of a Church in conflict with the governments of the Juarista Liberal Reform, characterized by their secular nature. This problem was extrapolated to the most representative Marian devotions of each faction, with the pontifical coronation as the perfect scenario in which to demonstrate their political and economic power. In this way, and after two important coronations promoted by the Roman clergy, the Local clergy used the same strategy as its opponents, promoting the pontifical coronation of Our Lady of Health of Patzcuaro, an important Marian devotion that would become a flag in this counteroffensive by the Local clergy commanded by José Ignacio Árciga and Ruíz de Chávez. Thus, what appeared to be a struggle of invocations, masked a war for political and economic control between different ecclesiastical hierarchies within the Mexican Church. | ca_CA |
