Entre unitati confrontació? La colònia grega d’Egipte des de finals del segle XIX fins al període d’entreguerres

Abstract

El present article s’ocupa de la colònia grega d’Egipte durant el període 1882-1922, centrant-se, resumidament, en tres paràmetres que ha tractat la bibliografia al respecte. Es tracta de: a) la configuració i el funcionament de les comunitats gregues, b) la relació de la colònia amb la població nativa i les autoritats britàniques, c) l’activitat econòmica dels grecs de la colònia. En tots tres casos es posa èmfasi, d’una banda, en les contradiccions que van sorgir dins de la colònia, i d’una altra, en el seu esforç de readaptació a un entorn canviant, amb el propòsit de mostrar aspectes de la història de la diàspora grega que hom tendeix a subestimar en el marcde les seves representacions contemporànies dins de l’esfera pública.

This paper deals with the Greek community in Egypt during the period 1882-1922, focusing briefly on three parameters that have concerned the relevant bibliography. It is about a) the configuration and the functioning of the Greek communities, b) the relationship of the colony with the native populationand the British Authorities, c) the economic activity of the Greeks of the colony. In all three cases emphasis is given on the one hand to the contradictions that arouse within the colony and on the other to its attempt to readjust itself to a changing environment, with the aim of highlighting aspects of the history of the Greek diaspora that tend to be underestimated on the context of its contemporary representations in the public sphere.
