In recent years, there has been significant progress towards constructing more inclusive
educational environments that aim to enhance the participation and learning of all students while
promoting equal opportunities. However, within the university context, the issue of supporting
students with functional diversity is still emerging, as they continue to encounter barriers that
hinder their progression through higher education. Within this framework, this study sought to
analyze the facilitators and barriers to participation and learning perceived by university students
with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in educational practices from the perspective of
Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Using a qualitative approach, we conducted semi-
structured interviews with seven students with autism from Universitat Jaume I. The findings
revealed that these students still face various obstacles to their participation and learning.
Insufficient visibility of objectives, lack of planning guidelines, and limited incorporation of their
interests in the curriculum were among the identified barriers. In conclusion, this study provides
several recommendations for educators to overcome these barriers and address the needs of
students through universal design principles. [-]
