Ciberespacio, arte y género: el net.art feminista como herramienta identitaria, política y emancipadora del sujeto femenino

Abstract

El net.art feminista se propone como movimiento de arte en la red actuando como brazo activista y político del ciberfeminismo en la representación del sujeto femenino. En este trabajo se ha estudiado el impacto que genera el net.art en la construcción identitaria y en la recuperación de la agencia creativa por parte de las artistas dentro del ámbito tecnológico. Se establece un marco descriptivo detallado del sujeto representado en el net.art, a través del análisis de diez obras (Wilding 1974; VNS Matrix 1992; Lialina 1996; Sollfrank 1997; Cheang 1998; Bookchin 1999; Abrahams 2001-2003; Flanaga 2003; Menkam 2010; Laboria Cuboniks 2015) fundamentales para el feminismo, situadas en un contexto reciente de finales del siglo XX, en la etapa de la internet temprana. El estudio de la evolución de la representatividad identitaria se enmarca en el periodo que comienza con las teorías de Donna Haraway y Sadie Plant acerca de la aparición de un sujeto cíborg que huye de la naturaleza binaria del género y que aprovecha un espacio virtual emergente, todavía libre de la amenaza del androcentrismo cultural, para romper con los límites corporarles que el mundo online nos permite, llegando hasta el inicio del siglo XXI con la aparición de la teoría xenofeminista, por parte del colectivo Laboria Cuboniks. Se recuperan además las primeras prácticas artísticas feministas de los años 70 como escenario previo desafiando la representación de la mujer como objeto expuesto en el arte institucional. El método de análisis de las obras se ha realizado desde una perspectiva feminista de la teoría crítica del arte, siguiendo la estructura de análisis que Remedios Zafra (2016) utiliza para recorrer Brandon, una de las obras emblemáticas del net.art, creada por Shu Lea Cheang (1998). Los resultados obtenidos indican que la práctica del net.art, como movimiento artístico-político vinculado al espacio virtual, interviene en la construcción de la identidad y la corporalidad del sujeto femenino. Las artistas poseen un dominio de la tecnología, del lenguaje hipertextual y del discurso posfeminista que les permite participar de manera clave en la creación y resignificación de un sujeto femenino digital, no universal, que se sitúa alejado de los cánones tradicionales y esencialistas del arte institucional.

Feminist net.art emerges as an artistic movement in the virtual realm, acting as an activist and political arm of cyberfeminism in representing the female subject. This study examines the impact of net.art on identity construction and the reclamation of creative agency by female artists within the technological domain. A detailed descriptive framework is established for the represented subject in net.art through the analysis of ten pivotal works (Wilding 1974; VNS Matrix 1992; Lialina 1996; Sollfrank 1997; Cheang 1998; Bookchin 1999; Abrahams 2001-2003; Flanaga 2003; Menkam 2010; Laboria Cuboniks 2015) that are fundamental to feminism and situated within the recent context of the late 20th century during the early internet era. The study of the evolution of identity representation is situated in the period that begins with the theories of Donna Haraway and Sadie Plant, exploring the emergence of a cyborg subject that challenges the binary nature of gender and takes advantage of an emerging virtual space, still free from the threat of cultural androcentrism, to break free from the corporeal limitations allowed by the online world. The investigation extends into the early 21st century with the emergence of xenofeminist theory by the Laboria Cuboniks collective. Additionally, the study reclaims the early feminist art practices of the 1970s as a prior stage that challenges the representation of women as exhibited objects within institutional art. The analysis method employed examines the artworks from a feminist perspective within critical art theory, following the analytical structure used by Remedios Zafra (2016) in her exploration of Brandon, one of the emblematic net.art works created by Shu Lea Cheang (1998). The findings suggest that net.art practice, as an artistic-political movement linked to the virtual space, intervenes in the construction of female subjectivity and embodiment. Female artists demonstrate mastery of technology, hypertextual language, and postfeminist discourse, enabling them to play a key role in the creation and redefinition of a digital female subject that stands apart from the traditional and essentialist canons of institutional art.
