dc.description.abstract | Self-criticism has been considered as a transdiagnostic dimension that constitutes a vulnerability factor for the development and maintenance of several mental health difficulties. Moreover, literature is particularly consistent when it comes to relating self-criticism to depression. On the contrary, increased self-compassion has been linked to lower levels of mental health symptoms, specifically depression, anxiety and stress. Although there is some overlap between selfcompassion and self-criticism, research has shown that they are two independent processes which are negatively correlated. The present study used a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to investigate the relationship between self-criticism, self-compassion and depression, while considering emotional overproduction and perseveration of negative emotions as mediating variables. A cross-sectional design was used. The sample consisted of 453 participants who completed measures of self-criticism, self-compassion, depression, emotional overproduction and perseveration of negative emotions. Results indicate that emotional overproduction mediates the relationship between self-criticism and depression. Additionally, the negative association between self-compassion and depression is mediated by the reduction in emotional overproduction and the perseveration of negative emotions. Therefore, the development of selfcompassion diminishes the negative effects of self-criticism on depression though these two variables. Consequently, we underline the importance of utilizing interventions based on selfcompassion to reduce self-criticism and thereby also addressing depression, and we clarify the variables through which this occurs. | ca_CA |
| ca_CA |
