Introduction: Patients admitted to the ICU may suffer from communication disabilities
during their stay, generating negative feelings towards themselves and their surroundings.
AAC systems allow their users to express themselves through their use and improve the care
given to the patient, increasing their satisfaction and eliminating communication barriers in
the ICU environment. Nursing staff have the responsibility to ensure that the use of AAC
systems is carried out and the patient is able to communicate.
Objective: To explore the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems in
nursing in the ICU setting.
Methodology: An integrative review of the literature available in the PubMed, Enfirpo,
Epistemonikos, and Google Scholar databases was conducted.
Results: After the literature search in the different databases, a total of 282 articles were
obtained. Subsequently, after applying filters, reading the title, abstract, and full text, and
applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 22 articles were obtained for the literature
review.
Conclusion: Augmentative and alternative communication methods are underutilized in the
ICU setting. The most commonly used systems are low-tech ones due their ease of use, not
requiring training, and being inexpensive, but they are less effective. High-tech systems,
despite being the most beneficial, are the least used due to the lack of training among
healthcare personnel, their high cost, and limited availability. Augmentative and alternative
communication systems have demonstrated numerous benefits for both patients and nursing
staff. [-]
