The continuous evolution of social networks and the emergence of the streaming
format are two phenomena that have been of interest to communication research in
recent times. One of its multiple objects of study are the current and future formats of
television programmes, such as the so-called reality shows or talent shows, which
are affected by the massification of this digital revolution and, therefore, must adapt
to this new reality to ensure their continuity on the television schedule.
The case of the Operación Triunfo programme clearly reflects this situation. In the
present research work, a search for information on the impact of new technologies at
present, the beginnings and evolution of Operación Triunfo and, finally, the irruption
of COVID - 19 during the programme's broadcast is carried out first. Subsequently, it
analyses, on the one hand, to what extent holding a gala in the middle of an
emergency situation was a turning point in the programme's format and managed to
keep the audience connected at a time of health crisis, taking into account the
resources and measures that were implemented throughout the gala and, more
exhaustively, the performance of the contestant Samantha Gilabert, chosen as
favourite at the end of the night. Finally, executive recommendations are proposed
for future live television broadcasts in emergency situations. [-]
