Sant Mateu 1237-1808: evolución urbana de la villa en la Baja Edad Media y la Edad Moderna

Abstract

In order to understand the urban development of Sant Mateu, we have to review the main historical events that gave the town its architectural nobility. To do this, we have to go back after the Christian conquest of Jaume I, where a new city was founded under the protection of Order of the Hospital, although at the beginning of the 14th century the territory passed into the hands of the Order of Montesa, making Sant Mateu the capital of Maestrazgo. Consequently, it will be during the Low Medieval period, when the population will see a growing cultural increase, which will be manifested through architecture, such as the construction of palaces, defensive structures, churches, convents, hermitages, etc. However, this cultural growth was paralyzed with the late medieval crisis, leading the town to a long period of depopulation and loss of its economic production. After the crisis, the population will recover moderately throughout the Ancien Regime, although it will never again reach the level it had had during the previous period. However, during this period a series of constructions will be carried out that will modify part of the urban layout of the town, such as the Convent of the Augustinian Nuns or the renovation of the chapels of the Archpriest Church. For this reason, the objective of this work is to carry out a historical analysis, from the 13th century to the early 19th century, to know how the urban fabric of the urban fabric of the population developed over the centuries, until forming a very similar disposition, which we know today. But to know this arrangement, we will have previously made a historical study of the main developments over the centuries, to later understand the causes of the construction of the different buildings.

Para poder entender el desarrollo urbano que vive la población de Sant Mateu, tenemos que hacer un repaso de los principales devenires históricos que dotaron a la villa de su esplendor arquitectónico. Para ello, nos tenemos que remontar a la época posterior a la conquista cristiana de Jaume I, cuando se fundará una nueva ciudad, bajo la protección del señorío de la Orden del Hospital. Si bien, a principios del siglo XIV el territorio pasará a manos de la Orden de Montesa, convirtiéndo a Sant Mateu, en la capital de Maestrazgo. Por ende, será durante el periodo Bajo Medieval, cuando la población verá un creciente incremento cultural, que será manifestado a través de la arquitectura, con la construcción de palacios, estructuras defensivas, iglesias, conventos, ermitas, etc. No obstante, este crecimiento cultural se verá cesado con la crisis Bajomedieval, conduciendo a la villa a un largo periodo de despoblación y pérdida de su producción económica. Tras el devenir de la crisis, la población volverá a recuperarse paulatinamente a lo largo del antiguo régimen, aunque nunca más volverá a alcanzar el esplendor que había tenido durante la época anterior. Aun así, durante este periodo se van a llevar a cabo una serie de construcciones que van a modificar parte del trazado urbano de la población, como el Convento de las Monjas Agustinas o la renovación de las capillas de la Iglesia Arciprestal. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este trabajo no es otro que el de hacer un análisis histórico, desde el siglo XIII hasta principios del siglo XIX, para conocer cómo se va desarrollando el entramado urbano de la población a lo largo de los siglos, hasta conformar una disposición muy semejante a la que conocemos en la actualidad. Pero para conocer esta ordenación, previamente habremos hecho un estudio a nivel histórico de los principales acontecimientos a lo largo de los siglos, para posteriormente entender las causas de la construcción de los diferentes edificios.
