Oswald Spengler y el concepto de "Historia" en la decadencia de Occidente

Abstract

En las siguientes páginas realizaremos un análisis del concepto de «Historia» desarrollado por Spengler en su obra más importante Der Untergang des Abendlandes. Umrisse einer Morphologie der Weltgeschichte (La decadencia de Occidente. Bosquejo de una morfología universal). Para llevar a cabo dicho análisis comenzaremos tratando algunos aspectos biográficos del autor y situando la obra dentro del marco de la historiografía contemporánea. A continuación, nos centraremos en desarrollar la teoría de la Historia planteada por el autor remitiéndonos a las influencias que ha recibido de Goethe y Nietzsche así como a la disquisición que efectúa entre los conceptos de «Cultura» y «Civilización» y a la tesis pesimista que plantea sobre el devenir de la historia. Por último, trataremos la incidencia que ejerció el pensamiento spengleriano en las teorías de Toynbee y Djuvara junto con algunas críticas que se han hecho a Spengler.

In the following pages we will carry out an analysis of the concept of history developed by Spengler in his most important work Der Untergang des Abendlandes. Umrisse einer Morphologie der Weltgeschichte (The Decline of the West. Sketch of a Universal Morphology). To carry out this analysis we will begin by dealing with some biographical aspects of the author and placing the work within the framework of contemporary historiography. Next, we will focus on developing the theory of history proposed by the author, referring to the influences he has received from Goethe and Nietzsche as well as the disquisition he makes between the concepts of culture and civilization and the pessimistic thesis he raises about the future of history. Finally, we will deal with the influence that Spengler's thinking had on Toynbee's and Djuvara's theories together with some criticisms that have been made of Spengler.
