Abstract

This article describes the methods used by the Faculty of Translation Studies in Germersheim (University of Mainz, Germany) to teach translation and interpreting students the basic principles of medicine and to help them understand medical terminology. The author presents several facet of medicine as an academic discipline and defines the biological, psychological and social levels of healthcare, as well as the political, economic and humanistic aspects of medicine in modern society. All these trends in medicine become a part of the training process for students of applied linguistics. Increasing internationalization and transcultural communication, results of globalization, may in the future become a field of work for community interpreters.

Der folgende Artikel beschreibt die in Germersheim (Universität Mainz, Deutschland) verwendete Methode, die den in Ausbildung befindlichen Dolmetschern und Übersetzern ein Grundwissen und Verständnis der medizinischen Terminologie und Vorgehensweisen vermittelt. Der Autor beschreibt verschiedene Aspekte der Medizin unter akademischen Gesichtspunkt. Er definiert die physiologischen, psychologischen und sozialen Ebenen der medizinischen Versorgung und geht auch auf die politischen, wirtschaftlichen und humanistischen Dimensionen der Medizin in unserer modernen Gesellschaft ein. Alle diese Aspekte der medizinischen Wissenschaft sind Teil des Unterrichts der in angewandter Linguistik eingeschriebenen Studenten. Als Folge der Globalisierung kann die aufkommende Internationalisierung und interkulturelle Kommunikation ihr zukünftiges Arbeitsfeld sein.
