Introduction: Family members who have a relative with BPD report difficulties with the
day-to-day challenges that they face. The lack of time available to receive a treatment is
often due to the busy lives of the family regarding work and other responsibilities.
The aim of this study is to verify the effectiveness and the acceptance of a new intensive
programme for family members who cannot attend sessions every week owing to lack of
time.
Method: This is a non-randomized pilot study with a pre-post evaluation and two
treatment conditions, an intensive one with six sessions and a traditional one with twelve.
The sample was made up of 46 relatives distributed in the two modalities, 21 in the
intensive modality and 24 in the traditional one. The variables such as burden,
depression, anxiety and stress, dominance and empowerment, family functioning and
quality of life have all been evaluated. The participants responded to the evaluation
protocol before and after treatment.
Results: Statistically significant improvements are observed in burden, depression and
stress as well as family functioning. No improvements in quality of life or anxiety are
found. There were no statistically significant differences either between both treatment
modalities. A good acceptance of the new treatment format by the participants is
observed.
Conclusion: The findings of this study confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of other
FC treatment modalities. New frontiers are opened to develop new treatment formats
adapted to the heterogeneity of the families that participate in the programme. [-]
