Recent research indicates important negative consequences of unemployment
on mental health, especially when unemployment is of long duration. However,
it seems that certain activities such as physical exercise are positively related to mental health. In addition, having personal resources such as emotional intelligence
(ei) could also help reduce the negative impact of unemployment. The
objective of this research was to evaluate the relationship between physical
exercise, ei and mental health, as well as the moderating role of ei in the relationship
between physical exercise and mental health in unemployed Spanish
people. Following a cross-sectional study, data were collected from 386 unemployed
Spaniards (54.2% women) with a mean of 32.8 years. Participants completed
the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (ipaq), the Mobile Emotional
Intelligence Test (meit), and the Mental Health Scale MHI-5. After controlling
for variables such as age, gender and time of unemployment, the results showed
a positive relationship between the practice of regular sport and the mental
health. Furthermore, this relationship is moderated by ei. Specifically, the unemployed
with high ei and physical activity scores reported fewer mental problems
than those who practiced less sport and had low ei scores. The findings of this
research helped understand the mental health of unemployed people, underlining
the importance of physical activity and the moderating role of ei when describing
this phenomenon while both representing themselves as fundamental
variables. [-]
