La revolta i guerra de la Unió de València (1347-1348). Un moviment burgés en defensa de la foralitat i el pactisme

Abstract

La revolta i guerra de la Unió va ser un episodi de la història del Regne de València que es va donar entre els anys 1347 i 1348. El Consell de la ciutat de València, impulsat per la burgesia que el componia, va formar una unió amb altres viles del regne (mentre que algunes es mantingueren reialistes, moltes altres s’adheriren a la Unió) i alguns nobles, per tal de pressionar a Pere el Cerimoniós. Aquest havia actuat contra els furs i privilegis deliberadament en la dècada anterior al conflicte, i havia iniciat una deriva autoritària que per als valencians no era tolerable. L’objectiu de la Unió va ser que el rei reparés els greuges comesos, però prompte afegiren noves peticions. L’entesa entre Consell i rei no va ser possible, malgrat els intents reiterats, i la situació esdevingué en una Guerra Civil que s’estengué gairebé tot un any i en la que, tot i que el bàndol unionista aconseguí guanyar les primeres batalles, finalment en sortiria vencedor el monarca. El Cerimoniós, que havia vençut, va reprimir la capital valenciana i les altres viles unionistes i va imposar càstigs i penes capitals als protagonistes del conflicte.

The revolt and war of the Union was an episode in the history of the Kingdom of Valencia that took place between 1347 and 1348. The bourgeoisie in the Council of the city of Valencia formed a union with other towns in the kingdom (while some remained royalist, many others joined the Union) and some nobles to put pressure on Peter IV (the Ceremonious). The latter had deliberately acted against the furs and privileges of Valencia in the decade prior to the conflict, and had begun an authoritarian drift that the Valencians could not tolerate. The aim of the Union was for the king to make reparation for the wrongs he had committed, but they soon added new demands. An understanding between the Council and the king could not be reached, despite repeated attempts, and the situation led to a Civil War that lasted almost a whole year. Although the Unionist side managed to win the first battles, in the end the monarch emerged the victor. In consequence, Peter IV repressed the Valencian capital and the other unionist towns and imposed punishments and capital punishments on the protagonists of the conflict.
