dc.description.abstract | Planteamiento. | ca_CA |
dc.description.abstract | Introduction. Wernicke's encephalopathy is a brain disorder caused by chronic alcohol abuse and the consequent thiamine deficiency, characterized by ophthalmopathy, ataxia and mental confusion that, if it’s not treated in time, it becomes chronic, mainly affecting memory and leading to anterograde amnesia, thus establishing the diagnosis of Korsakoff Syndrome. Methods. Systematic review of articles that analyze the morphological alterations evidenced by radiological images in patients with Korsakoff Syndrome. Results. Studies comparing healthy patients with alcoholics show alterations in the structures surrounding the 3rd ventricle. Among the anatomical structures affected in this pathology, the mammillary bodies stand out, which are a group of neurons that constitutes a fundamental element for the limbic system and the Papez circuit. DiscussionConclusion. The visualization of morphological alterations in imaging tests performed on alcoholic patients with suspected Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome could represent a great advance in the early diagnosis, treatment, evolution and survival of this disease. | ca_CA |
