Fidei defensores. Arte y poder en tiempos de conflicto religioso en la Inglaterra Tudor. Enrique VIII y María I y Felipe II

Abstract

Enrique VIII consiguió en 1521 el título de defensor de la fe. De origen católico, la intitulación adquirió en su reinado carácter protestante, en relación con la fundación de la Iglesia de Inglaterra y quedó ligada a sus sucesores. Por ello, en tiempos de María Tudor, el título regresó a su origen católico con más fuerza si cabe. Recorremos en este texto el uso de propagandístico del apelativo Fidei Defensor en relación con las artes en un contexto de conflicto religioso, entre Enrique VIII y María Tudor. Su esposo, Felipe II, seguirá empleando el título inglés en otro ámbito, el de la lucha contra el enemigo turco.

Henry VIII obtained in 1521 the title of defender of the faith. Of Catholic origin, the title acquired in his reign Protestant character, in connection with the founding of the Church of England and was linked to his successors. For this reason, in the times of Mary Tudor, the title returned to its Catholic origin with more force if possible. In this text we go through the propagandistic use of the appellation Fidei Defensor in relation to the arts in a context of religious conflict, between Henry VIII and Mary Tudor.
