Feminist Representation in Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber and other Stories

Abstract

Feminism has been present in our Society for a long time, the fight has been divided into three differentwaves; the first wave wasmainlydirected to achieve the voting right for women.Second Wave feminism tried to fight for real equalityand to show the damage patriarchy had done to not just women,but also men, the movement alsobecamemore inclusive regarding race and social status.One of the means used to spread the feminist ideology was literature; there were many essays and books who talked about the movement, its objectives and demands; however, there were also many fiction authors that included the ideology in their stories, here is where we can situate Angela Carter. Carter was one of the most revindicative and radical authors during Second Wave feminism, she portrayed her ideals in her stories and used her female characters to show women empowerment and to criticize society. Hence, the aim of this thesisis to analyze the means Carter uses in the stories forming The Bloody ChamberAnd Other Storiesto portray her feminist ideologyandto empower women.To do this, there will be carried ananalysis of some of the metaphors and references that can be found in thedifferent stories from the book; furthermore, the characters that appear will also be analyzed. In the last section of the thesis it will be provided a conclusion based on the findings from the analysis.
