The aim of this article is to analyse the evolution of the primary and secondary elements in the topos of ‘Pericles and the fall of the slave’ from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, and how the secondary elements are key for understanding why the authors use the topos. The article also takes into account the secondary element of the healing dream in Plutarch’s Life of Pericles as a reflection of the knowledge he had about incubation dreams. Finally, it shows how this healing dream influences the topos as it changes this secondary element into a primary one. [-]
