Access to a paid job is perceived as one of the main objectives to be achieved in people with severe mental disorder, as it ensures that the person feels an active part of society. The aim of this paper is to conduct a comprehensive literature review on the role of employment in the SMD recovery process, and also to make the reader reflect on where he or she is headed. The methodology used consisted of a bibliographical review of people with SMD and employment, from its legislative context to historical evolution, including the current business situation in the Basque Country. On the other hand, the results show that more and more social institutions are involved in promoting the labour participation of the group, as well as the importance of continuing to promote individualised support strategies to achieve full integration into society.
