incluyendo envejecimiento, enfermedades inflamatorias, cardiovasculares y
radicales libres, ejercicio físico intenso y antioxidantes.
intenso. [-]

Introduction. Oxidative stress is a harmful state for the organism since it produces cellular and
tissue damage, and is involved in different pathophysiological states, including aging,
inflammatory, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Physical exercise
has been shown to produce an increase in reactive oxygen species, especially if it is intense.
Antioxidant supplementation has been proposed as a method to reduce oxidative stress
produced by this type of exercise, but no conclusion has been reached on its efficacy.
Objectives. The main objective of this review was to study the effects of antioxidant
supplementation on the oxidative state of cells in individuals who perform intense physical
exercise. In addition, the level of oxidative stress produced in athletes after performing intense
physical exercise in running, cycling or strength or resistance exercises was studied.
Material and methods. 32 articles from the bibliographic search in the Pubmed, Web of
Science and Cochrane databases were included, using the terms oxidative stress, free radicals,
intense physical exercise and antioxidants.
Results. After intense physical exercise, there is an increase in reactive oxygen species that
leads to an increase in oxidative stress. Some supplements such as cashew juice, ubiquinol and
cherry can decrease this condition due to its antioxidant effects, neutralizing ROS. Others have
been shown to be ineffective, such as green tea or methylsulfonylmethane. And from others
there is not enough scientific evidence to assess its action, for example of ascorbic acid,
vitamin A, pomegranate, curcumin or taurine.
Conclusions. There is sufficient evidence to support the use of antioxidant supplements as an
effective method of reducing oxidative stress produced by intense exercise. [-]
