El stop motion en la era de la convergencia mediática: el caso de Clay Kids

Abstract

The objective of the following research is to analyze the effects produced by digitalization and media convergence in the technique of stop motion animation with the aim of describing their present and analyzing their situation in the inmediate future. Since the first animated experiments of Meliès up to today, the cinema of stop motion animation has survived the ups and down of the audiovisual industry, constantly evoluting. The perspective taken in this paper is not only focused on the technological advances but also in the way in wich it has adapted her languages and traditions to hybridize in new narrative forms characterised by the transmedialityof nowadays. First part of these paper establishes theoric frame of reference which will allow us both to understand the essence and the expressive potential of the technique and also to describe the characteristics of the new media space marked by the convergence. Departing from the contextualization we will establish the relations between both of them fron its hybridization in alltype of interactive and audiovisual discourses. In the second part we will analyze the Clay Kids (Javier Tostado, 2014) case study the first Spanish TV series animated in stop motion animation technique and using transmedia storytelling.

El siguiente trabajo de investigación tienecomo objeto el análisis de los efectos que ha producido la digitalización y la convergencia mediática en los productos realizados con la técnica de animación stop motion, con el objetivo de describir su presente y analizar su situación en el futuro inmediato. Desde los primeros experimentos animados de Meliès hasta hoy, el cine de animación stop motion ha sobrevivido a los avatares de la industria audiovisual, siempre en constante evolución. La perspectiva que se adopta en esta investigación no se centra sólo en los avances tecnológicos, sino en la forma en la que adapta lenguajes y tradiciones previas, para hibridarse en las nuevas formas narrativas caracterizadas por la transmedialidad de hoy en día. En la primera parte de esta investigación se establece el marco teórico de referencia que nos permita, por un lado, entender la esencia y potencial expresivo de la técnica, así como describir las características del nuevo espacio mediático marcado por la convergencia mediática. Partiendo de esta contextualización se establecerán las relaciones existentes entre ambas a partir de su hibridación en todo tipo de discursos audiovisuales e interactivos. En la segunda parte, se analizará el estudio de caso de Claykids (Javier Tostado, 2014), la primera seriede televisión española, animada en stop motion y con un desarrollo transmedia.
