Previous research has studied how four or five of the six cultural dimensions proposed by Hofstede influence the presence of women on boards of directors. Therefore, the objective of this research is to analyze how gender diversity on boards of directors is affected by all of Hofstede's cultural dimensions in a sample consisting of 12,447 firm-year observations, comprising 28 countries and 9 economic sectors for a period of time from 2004 to 2015, inclusive. The data for this investigation was collected from Thomson Reuters’ database. The document is based on institutional theory, which suggests the idea that companies are influenced by cultural aspects, since organizations are not separated from their environment, but interact with it through stakeholder relationships. The results show that the cultural dimension of forbearance has a positive effect on the proportion of female directors on boards of directors. In contrast, the dimensions of power distance and masculinity have a negative effect, while individualism, avoidance of uncertainty and long-term orientation do not influence the presence of female directors.
