Differences in the sexual functioning between spanish women and men with and without a diagnosis of chronic pain: the influence of copying styles

Abstract

A 17.6% of the Spanish population suffer from chronic pain. Sexuality is one of the most affected areas by this disease, however, it is one of the least studied. This study aims to analyse whether there are differences in sexual functioning between people with and without a diagnosis of chronic pain and to assess the influence of coping strategies. A total of 282 participants residing in Spain aged between 18 and 72 years met the inclusion criteria. Depending on the medical condition, there were 83 and 62 women with and without a diagnosis of chronic pain, respectively, and 63 and 74 men with and without a diagnosis of chronic pain, respectively. The sample completed sociodemographic and clinical online questions, the Female Sexual Function Index or the International Index of Erectile Function, and the Coping Questionnaire for Chronic Pain.

Un 17,6% de la población española presenta dolor crónico. La sexualidad es una de las áreas más afectadas por esta enfermedad, sin embargo, es de las menos estudiadas. Este estudio tiene como objetivo analizar si existen diferencias en el funcionamiento sexual entre personas con y sin diagnóstico de dolor crónico y evaluar la influencia de las estrategias de afrontamiento. Un total de 282 participantes residentes en España con edades comprendidas entre 18 y 72 años cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. Según la condición médica, había 83 y 62 mujeres con y sin diagnóstico de dolor crónico, respectivamente, y, 63 y 74 hombres con y sin diagnóstico de dolor crónico, respectivamente. La muestra cumplimentó de manera online preguntas sociodemográficas y clínicas, el Índice de la Función Sexual Femenina o Índice Internacional de Función Eréctil, y el Cuestionario de Afrontamiento ante el Dolor Crónico.
