Why the original version of Disney songs is not literally translated into Spanish but 'adapted'

Abstract

This work is focused on the comparative analysis of the translation from English to Spanish of several songs from Disney movies. The main objective of the study is to understand why Disney songs are not literally translated from the language of the original version to other languages, focusing on the translation into Spanish of the main songs from the movies Frozen and Moana. To achieve this, it will be necessary to resort to the four poetic rhythms of classical rhetoric and Pentathlon Principle’ proposed by Peter Low (2003). Therefore, when comparing both versions (English-Spanish) the characteristics such as rhyme, the amount of syllables used or the accentual distribution will be taken into account. On the other hand, it will also be worth mentioning if the translated or adapted version resembles or approaches the original version and maintains the original message of the lyrics as well. The aforementioned is important since Disney songs are aimed at a children's audience and therefore the translations must be very meticulous as well as melodic. Finally, the results show that Disney songs follow some parameter: they keep almost the same amount of syllables when it comes to translating a song into other language in order to maintain the melodic or rhythmic part, as well as they make the translation, as faithful as possible to the lyrics, meaning or message of the original song.

Este trabajo se centrará en el análisis comparativo de la traducción del inglés al español de varias canciones de películas de Disney, en este caso, Frozen y Moana. El objetivo principal es entender por qué las canciones de Disney no se traducen literalmente del idioma de la versión original a otros idiomas, centrándose en la traducción al español. Para lograr esto, será necesario recurrir a los cuatro ritmos poéticos de la retórica clásica y el Principio de Pentatlón propuesto por Peter Low (2003). Por lo tanto, al comparar ambas versiones (inglés-español) se tendrá en cuenta características como la rima, la cantidad de sílabas utilizadas o la distribución de la acentuación. Por otro lado, también cabe mencionar si la versión traducida o adaptada se asemeja o se acerca a la versión original y mantiene el mensaje original de la letra también. Lo mencionado anteriormente es importante ya que las canciones de Disney están dirigidas a un público infantil y por lo tanto las traducciones deben ser muy meticulosas y melódicas. Por último, los resultados mostrarán que las canciones de Disney siguen unos parámetros como por ejemplo, mantener casi el mismo número de sílabas cuando se trata de traducir una canción a otro idioma con el fin de mantener la parte melódica o rítmica, así como hacer la traducción aunque no literal, tan fiel como sea posible a la letra, significado o mensaje de la canción original.
