The World Health Organization (WHO) points out that the decline in mortality is leading
to a lengthening of life expectancy (WHO, 2015), which entails demographic changes
with major repercussions at the individual and societal levels. In 2002, it coined the
term active ageing, understood as “the process of optimizing opportunities for health,
participation and security in order to improve the quality of life as people age” (WHO,
2002).
The advance to a technological era implies, with the arrival of ICTs, an ever-changing
flow of information (Román-García & Almansa-Martínez, 2016), where the problem of
the digital dived appears both in access to ICTs and in technological literacy (Colombo,
Aroldi & Carlo, 2015).
Elderly people have become digital immigrants, i.e. functional illiterates without
technological and communication skills (Rodríguez Barrera, 2014). This population
group is very heterogeneous and marked by obsolete stereotypes (Peral-Peral,
Villarejo-Ramos & Arenas-Gatián, 2017). Diversity lies in the course of life with fixed
elements and other subjects to change (WHO, 2015) and training actions in digital
literacy are necessary to promote equity and social cohesion (Matias, Leiva & Franco,
2016). This raises the question of this paper: What factors are influencing adaptation to
new technologies? [-]
