| ca_CA |
dc.description.abstract | There have been many definitions provided by institutions and authors about pain, the most current would conceive it as "a distressing experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage with sensory, emotional, cognitive, and social components." (Williams & Craig, 2016). The most frequent treatment for pain has always been the medical one, with many evidence for its efficiency in the decrease for it, but in the other hand, there is no such a strong evidence about its relation with the improvement of health, that is within mental health, proportionally. To explain this effectiveness, the influence of underlying psychological mechanisms has been proposed, with irrational beliefs being clear examples of factors that open the gate to pain. The objective of this study is to explore how the changes in irrational beliefs or pain throughout 6 months of treatment are associated to improvements in the interference of pain in mental health and physical health. It is expected that the changes in pain will be related with the changes in physical health, but no changes in mental health, and that the changes in irrational beliefs will be related with changes in mental health, but no physical health. By analyzing bivariate correlations from 136 participants (85 women and 51 men) from the Pain Unit of the Vall d'Hebron Hospital from 2015 to 2017, two questionnaires were administered, a pretest in the first consultation and a second after treatment. It was observed that the relation between the change of pain and the change of interference and the changes of physical health were negatively related with the changes in pain and the changes of interference. For mental health, the changes in beliefs, especifically the self-downing was related to a worsening in it. It was observed that changes in pain do not seem to improve mental health, so, with only one medical treatment it is not sufficient to improve mental health. | ca_CA |
