Nowadays there is a need of rearranging the way languages are taught ever since the first time we are
in contact with them. The storytelling has a lot to do with this and that is why it is so important to choose the
right version of both the original and the translated one. The last four years of my life living and working in
a school in Los Angeles, California, were determining for me to know that the best way to teach a language
is helping yourself with books and stories. There, in LA, kids would learn Spanish, Hebrew or French that
way; throughout storytellings which would make that learning very interesting for the little ones. At the
moment I am working in a bilingual school in Valencia where I teach Spanish-speakers English the same
way. Reading stories with them is the key and so it is to find the highest quality translations.
This final degree work consists on an analysis of the translation from English into Spanish of the
book The Story of Ferdinand. Throughout a worksheet that the students of primary 1st (6-7 years old) completed before and after the reading, the aim is to observe how the translation of certain social and cultural
aspects affects their understanding; as well as it does the fact of assuming that the readers will know some
concepts or ideas that are not related to their culture. This book we are going to work on clearly has a peaceful message. It is a reference of the literature in many ways since after it was published in the United States
in 1938, it has been translated into 60 different languages.
Is the translation related to the way the reader is perceiving some aspects in the Spanish culture?, is
the translator or even the writer assuming the reader will know some of the particularities described on the
book?, after reading the book, does the reader’s vision change about some concepts that appear on it?, do
they know any new ones?… To all these and many other questions this work is trying to answer throughout
the analysis of the story and its translated version. [-]
