Introduction: The term premature describes children born before 37 week of gestation. The
increase of preterm births in Spain and the risk associated with its complications make the
Developmental Care necessary, which also includes music therapy. It is considered a
professional intervention in the health area which aims optimize the patient’s quality of life.
Objectives: To know the efficacy of music therapy as a preventive measure against the
premature’s overall stress when hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Methodology: A bibliographical review was carried out from the articles obtained in the
scientific databases, taking into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The databases
were: PubMed, Biblioteca Cochrane Plus, CINAHL y Preevid.
Results: A total of 875 articles were obtained and, after applying the inclusion and exclusion
criteria, 25 articles were included. 12 articles came from Cochrane Library Plus, 9 from
Pubmed, 3 from CINAHL and 1 from Preevid.
Discussion and conclusions: The revised literature proves that music therapy achieves a
reduction of the heart rate, respiratory rate, pain and the mother’s stress and anxiety
perception. It also increases oxygen saturation and optimize the sleep and feed pattern. For
this reason, it is considered a non-pharmacological and effectively preventive measure against
the premature’s integral stress. [-]
