Background: Bariatric surgery includes a group of surgical interventions to generate
important weight losses. On the other hand, obesity is related to sexual dysfunction, affecting
the patients’ sexual necessity. These two concepts are connected since a decrease in body
weight usually leads to an improvement in sexual function.
Aims: Identify changes in sexual behavior after going through bariatric surgery; the most
effective methods to detect these changes; the factors associated and development throughout
the time.
Methodology: We conducted a integrative review of the literature in different databases:
Pubmed, Cochrane Library, CINHAL SciELO, Dialnet and LILACS. There we used
“Descriptores en Ciencias de la Salud (DeCS)” and “Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).
Results: We used n=20 articles, after evaluating their quality by applaying the established
criteria of inclusion and exclusion. The main subjects that are discussed are short-term and
long-term changes in sexual behavior, and the factors with the greatest influence on these
changes.
Conclusions: After surgery, changes in sexual behavior are developed in both sexes due to
the improvement in quality of life and changes in the pattern of sexual hormones. These
changes are detected with scales and indexes like SQoL-F, SQoL-M, FSFI, BSFI and IIEF.
This benefits persist until patients start gaining weight again. [-]
