Motivation is one of the most relevant factors for successful second
language learning. First, we will define the concept of motivation, discuss some of
the major theories of motivation in learning and explain how motivation in second
language acquisition (SLA) has developed over time. Research on the role of
motivation in teaching/learning a second language (L2) will also be examined.
Finally, some pedagogical implications will be outlined in an attempt to highlight the
importance of devising motivational strategies to foster success in the L2 classroom. [-]
