| ca_CA |
dc.description.abstract | The topic of this research may be framed within the encounter happened between East and West in the Society Islands (French Polynesia) at the end of the 18th century, the reconstruction of the social structure prior the colonization, and the effects on it due to the imposition of a new cultural model. It is focused in the study of two human groups which have both as a referent the feminine role: the māhū, men educated as women, within the field of the tradition, and the raerae, men who reclaim to be women, within the field of transsexuality; and in the different levels of acceptation, integration or rejection in their respective communities, whose social architecture, before and now, is supported by a patriarchal system, and, due to this, the place of women into this scheme is also examined. This research is conveyed by the role of the Western myths about the vahine's (women) sexual availability, firstly sheltered by the literature and the art, and since the mid-twentieth century, by tourism, media and ICT industries. Finally, and after reviewing the concepts of body, sex and gender in Polynesian society, the limitation of the multiple categories into which the latter is fragmented is revealed, specially the named third gender, to combat structural inequality of the patriarchy and its violences, which has taken us, ultimately, to the current debate settled in Feminism regarding the Transfeminism movement. | ca_CA |
