In this work we are going to ask ourselves about the complementarity between
faith and reason. We are going to approach a debate that has been in the history of European
thought for centuries. We will start from a fairly current meeting between two great European
thinkers who represent these two great concepts. Jürgen Habermas on the part of reason and
Joseph Ratzinger on the part of faith. It should be clarified that at no time is it intended to
present this meeting as a confrontation between faith and reason, since, as Father Manuel
Carreira used to say, faith and reason are not and cannot contradict each other. On the
contrary. John Paul II's encyclical Fides et Ratio begins by saying: « Faith and reason are like
the two wings with which the human spirit rises towards the contemplation of the truth ». This
is how their relationship has been seen for centuries but we will also see how this relationship
evolves, or at least the perception of it, from the arrival of modern thinkers and, above all, the
Enlightenment. Finally, we will ask ourselves what has happened when faith and reason have
undergone this separation. We will see the consequences that this has had for European
societies and we will take a brief look at the current society regarding these issues. [-]
