| ca_CA |
dc.description.abstract | During the last decade, there has been an undeniable increase in the use of social media channels as platforms for discussion and debate of feminist theory, its different interpretations and applications in the offline sphere, and the validity of “women” as the political figure of feminism. Even though we can indeed consider social media as a logical and apt means of communication for the 21st century, as far as spreading and discussing feminist theory is concerned, it is important to consider and analyze also one main disadvantage: the simplification and distortion of feminist theory due to lack of contextualization in social media, which hinders the application of feminist policies that are based on women’s real needs. One of the main problems arises from the intrusion of certain people or groups with specific agendas in the theory discourse (for example, white feminism or bourgeoisie feminism, radical and queer feminisms, sex-positive and anti-sex work feminisms, etc.) that argue that their interpretations and ideas are the only valid and correct ones. This online clash between the different interpretations of feminist theory ignores one of the essential aspects of feminism: intersectionality. Moreover, it silences and invisibilizes all those minority voices that feel excluded from and oppressed by the very same movement they are part of. It becomes thus clear that these divisions and differences in feminist theory interpretation are a reflection of all the realities and expressions of feminism in day-to-day life, and of the different approaches and strategies for feminist social action. The daily lives of countless of self-defined feminists are imbued with online social action, media campaigns on feminist theory, and discussions on social media about the relevance and suitability of one type of feminism above another to act as reflection of society and be the solution to current social inequalities. But how do these online interactions on social media shape and influence the political and socioeconomic spheres of our society? | ca_CA |
