Las redes sociales son una respuesta a la necesidad de comunicación que tenemos. Podemos distinguir tres tipos de ellas: destinadas al público en general, profesionales y científicas. En este artículo se plantea que el uso de las redes sociales está cambiando el significado del concepto de “amigo” y que debe tenerse en cuenta la imagen pública que se quiere mantener en estas redes. En las redes generalistas se entremezclan cuestiones personales y profesionales, lo cual es aprovechado por algunas empresas de marketing. La web 2.0 puede servir para conseguir avances en la ciencia, que es fundamentalmente colaborativa, pero existe un grave inconveniente para su utilización pues los científicos prefieren comunicar sus avances en revistas científicas. Social networks are a response to our need of communication. There are three types of social networks: those for the general public, for professionals and for scientists. This paper argues that the use of social networking is changing the meaning of the concept of “friend”, and that we have to be careful to preserve our public image in these networks. In general purpose networks, personal and professional issues are intertwined, and this is used by some marketing companies. The Web 2.0 collaborative media tools can be used to achieve advances in science, which is essentially collaborative, but this potential use faces a serious drawback because scientists prefer to communicate their work in scientific journals.
