El lenguaje de la medicina en español: cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí y qué futuro nos espera

Abstract

El lenguaje español de la medicina ha pasado por diversas vicisitudes desde la aparición de los primeros textos médicos en castellano a finales del Medievo hasta el presente. Durante ese tiempo los periodos de gran brillantez se han conjugado con otros muy delicados, como los sufridos durante los siglos xix y xx, a causa de la gran presión ejercida por las lenguas francesa e inglesa, respectivamente. Tras efectuar una breve revisión de ese recorrido, intentaremos analizar algunas de las posibilidades que se le presentan al español para no perder definitivamente el estatus de lengua de transmisión de la medicina en un contexto hegemónico del inglés como el actual.

From the appearance of the first Spanish medical texts in the late Middle Ages to the present, Spanish medical language has experienced several upheavals. During this time, periods of great brilliance have blended with other, more delicate moments such as those in the 19th and 20th centuries, caused by the great pressure exercised by the French and English languages respectively. After a brief review of this trajectory, we will attempt to analyze some of the possibilities for the Spanish language to avoid a definitive loss of status as a language of medical transmission in the hegemonic context that currently favors English.
