La (norte) “occidentalización” historiográfica de la revolución… e ¿(Hispano)América?

Abstract

The triumph of the first liberalism —the revolutionary— against the french Old Regime, from the last third of the 18th century until 1848, invented national histories. The history of the 19th century began to be rewritten, and went from the chronicles to the heroic stories with national dimensions and romantic deeds. National history triumphed. Already in the 20th century, a central part of the interpretations of contemporary history became universal, especially because the cohesive vehicle of this contemporary universalism was the origin, growth, expansion, development and, also, crisis of the capitalist system and its diverse manifestations. Since the fifties, and especially since the sixties of the 20th century, in the context of the Cold War and in the process of the European decolonization in Asia and Africa, there was an intense criticism of this universalist conception of contemporary history for having a eurocentric approach. The present research will address and question this vision, and point out a great omission: the history of the revolutionary processes of Hispanic American independence in most of the contemporary universal histories.

El triunfo del primer liberalismo —el revolucionario— frente al Antiguo Régimen francés, desde el último tercio del siglo xviii hasta 1848, inventó las historias nacionales. La historia del siglo xix comenzó a ser reescrita, se pasó de la crónica al relato heroico con dimensiones nacionales y gestas románticas. La historia nacional triunfó. Ya en el siglo xx, una parte central de las interpretaciones de la historia contemporánea se volvió universal, en especial porque el vehículo cohesionador de este universalismo contemporáneo fue el origen, el crecimiento, la expansión, el desarrollo y, también, la crisis del sistema capitalista y de sus diversas manifestaciones. Desde los años cincuenta y, en especial, desde la década de los sesenta del siglo xx, en el contexto de la Guerra Fría y en pleno proceso de descolonización europea en Asia y África, se produjo una intensa crítica a esta concepción universalista de la historia contemporánea por tener un enfoque eurocentrista. En el presente estudio se aborda y cuestiona esta visión, y se señala una gran omisión: la historia de los procesos revolucionarios hispanoamericanos de independencia en la mayor parte de las historias contemporáneas universales.
