This thesis introduces a statistic and economic viewpoint of the transportation sector under the perspective of sustainable development. It aims to
review how the different sectors in the transport economy have developed
over the past decades to explain the current state of the transport economy.
A multitude of statistical measurements is used to get an overview of how
the different transport sectors can be measured to explain their development
in a global and especially European context.
The thesis finds that there have been significant shifts among all sectors
of the transportation industry, especially in terms of geographical and modal
shares.
The analysis of each sectors’ sustainability efforts clearly shows a lack of
clarity and unity leading to the conclusion that efforts need to be revised
to keep the global rise of temperature beneath 2 degrees over the coming
decades. [-]
