This TFM analyzes High Noon (Fred Zinnemann, 1952) from different perspectives,
trying to understand the reason for the disdain of a great part of the cinematographic
criticism towards this emblematic and memorable film, either under the accusation of
being excessively academic or for betraying the classic western values. When in reality
it is a key and referential title in the evolution of the genre, with more human and
psychologically complex characters fleeing from the archetype. The generic hybridization
that supposes - and that also made it so criticized - makes it an outpost of today's
postmodernism, either because of its documentary and neo-realistic tone, its air of film
noir - or gray -, of suspense thriller, as allegory complaint policy to maccathysm or as a
subversion to Hollywood classic cinema. Formally it is also unique, thanks to
Zinnemann's good work behind the cameras and his rhythm of Greek tragedy, which
respects the unity of space, time and action by employing a narrative structure that gives
the impression of being narrated in real time, as a courtesy of the Oscar-winning editor
Elmo Williams.
An example of collaborative cinema in which, however, the author's imprint can be noted,
in another of his stories about an individual facing the community to defend his strong
moral principles; and a very influential film that has given rise to a multitude of substitutes
in film and television, with derivations such as the actioner of the 80s or the TV series
24. And we are talking about the most projected film in the history of Casablanca and
favorite of American presidents as different as Eisenhower, Reagan or Bill Clinton, and
that it persists in the collective imagination thanks to the fact that its original title and its
translation into spanish have become part of popular language in both cultures as a
phrase made. Connotating, respectively, when someone must face a decisive moment
alone -high noon- or be without more help than one's own in the face of a threat -solo
ante el peligro-. But the influence of the film extends beyond popular culture, and its
icons are used throughout the world to symbolize values such as integrity or democracy;
as the fact that the image of Gary Cooper ballot in hand, encouraged Polish citizens to
vote in the democratic elections in June 1989, according to the famous Tomasz Sarnecki
poster.
I intend to discover their keys by textually analyzing their images as well as their
references, their expressive resources, their legacy and their importance in the western
genre and in the history of cinema. If High Noon has managed to resist the passage of
time and be admired by institutions like the AFI -the 27th best American film of all timeit is because its staging, the truth behind its history and its characters give off and her
moral teaching continues to make it as modern and current as necessary. [-]
