Posterism is a tool of the visual arts that emerged at the end of the 19th century as a new form of
propaganda and publicity, and that will be used by the states of different countries to convey
ideas, form, inform, convince, persuade or appeal to the citizens.
With the arrival of the new century and its social, economic and political changes, the new
American women, traditionally relegated to the domestic sphere, will claim their rights, but they
will not be heard until their intervention in the First World War. These women will be called for
the first time by their country to the warlike and active participation for the defense of their
homeland, which will make them see themselves as subjects capable of participating in the
political life of the nation. However, they will always be called as substitutes or auxiliaries and only recognized as that.
In this warlike context, cartelism will be formed as a key tool in the war propaganda directed to
the masses it represents. This paper aims to analyze the gender roles that the American war
posters attribute to women in their representations for their patriotic participation in the First and
Second World Wars and their possible relationship with the gender roles perpetuated by the
history of art. Thus, five different categories can be grouped according to their role in the war:
women as civilian workers, women as symbols of the ideal of the family, women as workers in
the army -where the figure of nurses will be included- women as victims and women as a threat. [-]
