República romana: desarrollo social e institucional y crisis

Abstract

La época republicana romana es muy interesante desde el punto de vista del funcionamiento institucional y todos los cambios sociales experimentados a lo largo de casi 500 años que sobrevivió este modelo de gobierno. El objeto de este trabajo ha sido demostrar cómo las instituciones y magistraturas de la República entraron en crisis debido a los cambios sociales y cómo la República entró, por su parte, en una crisis profunda que acabó con este modelo de gobierno y dio pie a la instauración de un modelo monárquico. Para demostrar esto se ha analizado la sociedad primitiva de la República y cómo esta ha ido evolucionando hasta dar lugar a una República imperialista que siguió una política expansionista. Por otra parte ha resultado necesario exponer el funcionamiento institucional y los cambios que este experimentó a lo largo de la etapa republicana. Es por eso por lo que han sido analizadas tanto las instituciones como las magistraturas para esbozar el panorama político de la República. La crisis institucional jugó un papel fundamental en la propia crisis de la República ya que, si la sociedad cambió, los dirigentes políticos romanos no reformaron las instituciones para que estas pudieran hacer frente a la nueva realidad política y social. Además, en la última etapa de la República las posiciones políticas se radicalizaron y acabaron por romper por completo este modelo de gobierno.

The Roman Republican period is very interesting from the perspective of the institucional functioning and all the social changes experimented during almost the 500 years that this model of government survived. The target of this paper is to demonstrate how the institutions and magistratures of the Roman Republic entered a phase of crisis because of all the social changes experimented; and how the Roman Republic itself entered a deep crisis that ultimately ended this model of government and finally regressed to a monarchy. To this effect the primitive society of the Roman Republic and how this evolved and gave way to an imperialism that pursued a thorough expansionism. On the other hand, to understand the institutional functioning and how this was altered by the social changes, both institutions and magistratratures had to be analyzed thoroughly. The institutional crisis was fundamental to the Roman Republic crisis because, while the society experimented deep changes, the political leaders failed to reform and adjust all the republican institutions so that these could face the new political and social reality. Furthermore, during the last phase of the Roman Republic, the political stage experimented a radicalisation and this ended up breaking this model of government.
