Medieval drama in English

Abstract

Medieval English Drama contributed significantly to society in medieval times. Even though, drama changed through the years, it reached the point in which it became essential for society. As the church and the clergy motivated this field, they were highly present with processions or even with the traditional mass. Hence, the aim of this work is to analyse the different types of medieval drama that were present at those past times and, especifically to develop the features of the various kinds of drama. This is the reason why we will deal with Morality plays, Mystery plays and Interludes. Morality plays are allegorical plays which normally represent a conflict between the good and the evil. The protagonist is met by personifications which make him or her choose a good or an evil life. In contrast, Mystery plays are medieval plays which develop biblical issues, such as The Creation or The Last Judgement. Meanwhile, Interludes which are short plays aiming to entertain the audience dealing with political issues using humour. Besides this, we will examine a key play - The Creation and the fall of Lucifer, in order to understand medieval drama characteristics and the importance of these performances in society and literature. Besides this, we will look into the language used at that period as well as the display employed for these performances.
