dc.description.abstract | Introduction: A significant percentage of asthmatics do not manage to control their disease despite the usual treatment, causing high economic costs related to their care. Given this situation, a series of biological treatments have appeared that could improve the course of the disease, being an interesting therapeutic alternative for these patients. Objectives: The objective of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness of five monoclonal antibodies in the treatment of severe asthma. Methodology: We reviewed 21 clinical trials from a search in three databases: Pubmed, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov. We created tables that gathered the most important information of each trial in which the efficacy of the different biological drugs was compared based on three parameters: exacerbations (%), FEV1 and ACQ score. Results: Mepolizumab, reslizumab, benralizumab and dupilumab significantly improved both lung function and control of symptoms. Mepolizumab, benralizumab and dupilumab decreased the rate of exacerbations compared to placebo, although the greatest reduction occurred with dupilumab. Conclusion: The new biological treatments represent an effective therapeutic alternative in the treatment of severe asthma, although their high prices make them unprofitable drugs nowadays. | ca_CA |
| ca_CA |
