The relationship between psychopatic traits and testing heart rate

Abstract

In past studies have found a significant relationship between low resting heart rate (rHR) and antisocial behavior, but the relationship between rHR and features of psychopathy is not yet clear. In the current study, the relationship between rHR and psychopathic traits was examined. The rHR was recorded for five minutes and psychopathic traits were measured by means of the psychopathic personality questionnaire (PPI-R) which includes psychopathic traits in two factors, the first is identified as the absence of fear, immunity to stress, emotional coldness and social influence and the second with dispositional tendencies and non-adaptive behaviors (impulsiveness, aggressiveness, antisocial behavior, etc.), in a non-criminal sample of 125 students aged between 18 and 30 years. As a statistical analysis, the hierarchical regression was used, where the relationship between the mean of the rHR and the sex, the age, IBM and the factors 1 and 2 of the PPI-R were estimated. Interestingly, the results have shown a positive correlation between rHR and the second factor of the PPI-R. This finding does not support the conclusions of previous studies that demonstrated an inverse correlation between rHR and maladaptive dispositional and behavioral tendencies. However, these results are not surprising since only 9 of the 17 studies included in the metaanalysis of Portnoy & Farrington (2015) that examined psychopathy found negative correlations between heart rate and psychopathic traits. More research is needed to examine these relationships, using large criminal and noncriminal samples to clarify the association between resting heart rate and each of the characteristics of the multidimensional construct of psychopathy.

En estudios pasados han encontrado una relación significativa entre la baja tasa cardiaca en reposo (rHR) y la conducta antisocial, pero la relación entre rHR y rasgos de psicopatía aún no está clara. En el estudio actual se examinó la relación entre rHR y rasgos de psicopatía. Se registró la rHR durante cinco minutos y se midió los rasgos de psicopatía mediante el cuestionario de personalidad psicopática (PPI-R) el cual engloba los rasgos de psicopatía en dos factores, el primero se identifica con ausencia de miedo, inmunidad hacia el estrés, frialdad emocional e influencia social y el segundo con tendencias disposicionales y conductas no adaptativas (impulsividad, agresividad, conducta antisocial etc.), en una muestra no criminal de 125 estudiantes de edades entre 18 y 30 años. Como análisis estadístico, se utilizó la regresión jerárquica donde se estimó la relación entre la media de la rHR y el sexo, la edad, IBM y los factores 1 y 2 del PPI-R. Interesantemente, los resultados han demostrado una correlación positiva entre rHR y el segundo factor del PPI-R. Este hallazgo no apoya las conclusiones de estudios anteriores que demostraron una correlación inversa entre la rHR y las tendencias disposicionales y conductuales inadaptadas. Sin embargo, estos resultados no son sorprendentes ya que solo 9 de los 17 estudios incluidos en el metanálisis de Portnoy & Farrington (2015) que examinaron la psicopatía encontraron correlaciones negativas entre la frecuencia cardíaca y los rasgos psicopáticos. Se necesita más investigaciones que examinen estas relaciones, utilizando muestras grandes criminales y no criminales para aclarar la asociación entre la frecuencia cardíaca en reposo y cada una de las características del constructo multidimensional de la psicopatía.
