dc.description.abstract | Pathological gambling is a public health problem, which has increased due to the use of the Internet and the proliferation of betting houses. With respect to the pattern of gambling, there is a greater prevalence of gambling among men than among women and young people than among adults. However, there is no agreement on what type of influence the socio-economic level has on prevalence. In addition, it is worth mentioning the scarcity of studies in university population. The objective of this study is to measure the prevalence of pathological gambling among university students in the Valencian Community. For this purpose, a sample of 652 subjects (41% men and 59% women) from the 8 public and private universities of the Valencian Community was studied. The instruments used were the SOGS (South Oaks Gambling Screen Game Questionnaire) and the NODS (NORC DSM-IV Screen for Gambling Problems). The results obtained show that men are more prevalent in gambling than women. With respect to social class, it is obtained that people of higher socioeconomic class as well as those of lower class present greater prevalence in the game than people of middle class. Thus, it is stated that the prevalence in gambling in the university population of the Valencian Community presents a higher percentage with respect to the standard Spanish population according to the recent work of the "Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego". However, this prevalence is similar in studies with university population of Madrid and Murcia. | ca_CA |
| ca_CA |
