In the school context, we can confirm that a big part of the student’s performance is due
to his/her cognitive abilities. The higher the cognitive abilities, the easier will students
learn and overcome academic challenges. However, if there are no motivational
variables activating their behaviour, these cognitive abilities will be ineffective when it
comes to overcoming academic challenges and their school performance will be
insufficient.
Education authorities worry about the fact that there is a lack of motivation in students
when facing the academic challenges that the current educational system presents. Many
studies agree on the fact that the school motivation is oriented guided by the action of
different factors, which modify the motivated behaviour of the students: the meaning
that the subject has for them, the possibility of successfully overcoming the learning
experiences proposed by the teachers, and the cost, in terms of time and effort, even
when considering themselves capable of overcoming difficulties and achieving learning
(A. Tapia, 1998)
We can conclude that general lack of motivation can directly affect the students’
performance, leading to premature withdrawal from academic training.
We believe that one of the factors affecting students’ motivation is the support that the
teacher is able to communicate to the students. That’s why the main objective of this
study is to analyse the relationship between the support provided by the teacher and the
goals adopted by the students. From this objective, we derive the following hypotheses:
H1: We expect a positive and significant relationship between the support offered by the
teacher and the adoption of goals centred in the command of the subject by the students.
H2: We expect that, the more support the student perceives during his/her learning, the
fewer goals of avoidance he/she will adopt.
To test our hypotheses, we used a simple of 73 subjects from the following high
schools: IES Juan Bautista Porcar (4º ESO), IES Caminás (1º ESO), IES Alfons XIII (3º
ESO) and IES Bajo Aragón (3º ESO). Their ages ranged from 12 to 19 years old, with
51% of boys and 49% of girls. Regarding the nationality of the participants, the 88% of
our sample was Spanish, 4% Moroccan, 4% Romanian and 4% of other varied
nationalities, such as Peruvian, Italian, and Brazilian.
We used the following scales, which were filled online in two sessions separated by an
interval of one month.
Scale of teacher supports (18 items): This scale assesses students' perception of the
supports provided by the teacher. we have used the following subscales:
-Scale of Instructional Supports (6 items): Scale that evaluates the initial
perception of the student about the help provided by the teacher.
-Scale of support-affective (7 items): This scale evaluates the perception that
students have of the confidence, respect, empathy and cordial treatment of the
teacher.
-Scale of teacher support for self-confidence (5 items): This scale evaluates the
ability of the teacher to motivate students about their abilities to pass the subject.
Scale of goals (9 items): This scale evaluates the decisions that students make about
what their objectives will be when facing the subject. In this study we have used the
sub-scales domain goals (5 items) and avoidance goals (4 items)
In order to analyse the data obtained, we used the statistical program IBM SPSS. We
performed descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and of realiability of the
scale (Cronbach’s Alfa) of the variables of the study. We then proceeded to analyse the
relationship between the studied variables using the Pearson’s bivariate correlations.
With the objective of testing the first hypothesis, we studied the relationship between
perceived support from the teacher and adoption of domain goals. In order to test the
second hypothesis, we studied the relationship between the variables of the teacher’s
support and the avoidance goals.
Taking into account the results obtained, regarding the first hypothesis, we can confirm
that the perception of positive support from the teacher towards the students increases
the possibilities of the adoption of domain goals related to the subject. Therefore, we
accept the suggested hypothesis, as expected by the “Modelo de Calidad de Situación
Educativa”.
Regarding the second hypothesis, the analyses performed (Pearson’s bivariate
correlations) show that the correlations between the support provided by the teacher and
the adoption of avoidance goals by the students are negative and non-significant. Thus,
we can conclude that the perception of support from the teacher does not significantly
influence when the students make the decision of adopting this kind of goals.
The present study expands the findings obtained in previous research on this topic as it
helps to explain how an active, motivating and positive attitude of the teacher towards
the students, influences their decision on how they will face the educational situation,
facilitating that they adopt goals focused on the domain and not only on the overcoming
of the subject or on the avoidance of work. [-]

Empero, si no existen variables
dificultades y lograr aprendizajes. (A. Tapia, 1998)
