Proyecto PORN (TIME): Adicción a la pornografía e interferencia atencional

Abstract

Introduction: The increased use of Internet in society has boosted new forms of addiction. Because of its public health concerns, one of the most important is cybersex addiction, and in particular, problematic online pornography consumption. Large amount of studies pointed out that pornography viewing can be excessive and uncontrolled, creating several problems in different areas. For this reason, it is important to study the underlying factors and maintainers. It is postulated that one can be the ability of pornography content to attact and consume attentional resources, interfering in attention to other relevant stimuli. Objective: The main purpose of this study is to explore the attentional bias created by pornography viewing, and make the comparison with the interference generated by other multimedia contents: sitcoms, videogames and documentay films. Moreover, we want to explore the relationship between this attentional bias and online and offline sexual behaviors and another underlying factors of consumption in the different contents. Method: We developed and applied an experimental task (Porn[Time]), to a group of participants whose age oscillates between 18 and 35 years old. The task consisted in a Stroop task concurrent to the exposition to different contents: pornography, sitcoms, videogames and documentary film condition. The participants should to ignore the videos and focusing in answer the trials quickly and accurately. Results: The data shown that pornography created the highest levels of attetional bias in general, but exists a differential effect depending of sex, being sitcoms the content more interfering in women. On the other hand, we can see demostred relationships between the reaction times in the different multimedia contents and the online and offline sexual behavior, and with traits as impulsivity and sensation seeking, and affectivity. Discusion: This study supports the ability of different multimedia contents (among them, pornography) to attract and consume attentional resources, and the relationship between the attentional bias and factors that play a role in their addictive potential. Thus, it is esential to propose new clinic approaches that adress this aspect in the different levels of the therapeutic

Introducción: El incremento del uso de Internet en la sociedad ha propiciado la aparición de nuevas formas de adicción, siendo una de las más relevantes por sus implicaciones sociosanitarias la adicción al cibersexo, y más en concreto, el visionado problemático de pornografía online. Gran cantidad de estudios apuntan a que el visionado de pornografía puede sobrevenir excesivo e incontrolado, generando graves problemas en diferentes áreas de la vida, por lo que es importante explorar aquellos factores que actuan como predisponentes o mantenedores. Se postula que uno podría ser la capacidad que posee el material pornográfico para atraer y consumir recursos atencionales, interfiriendo en la atención a otros estímulos relevantes Objetivo: El objetivo es explorar la interferencia atencional generada por la visualización de pornografia y su comparativa con la generada por otros contenidos multimedia: series de televisión, videojuegos y condición documental, así y como la relación existente entre dicha interferencia cognitiva y la conducta sexual online y offline, y con otros factores que actuan como predisponentes del consumo en los diferentes contenidos. Metodo: Se desarrolló y aplicó una tarea experimental (Porn[Time]) a participantes con edades entre los 18 y 35 años. La tarea consistía en la realización de una tarea Stroop paralela a la exposición a diferentes contenidos multimedia: pornografía: series de televisión, vieojuegos y documentales. Los participantes debían ignorar el video y responder a los ensayos lo más rápido y precisamente posible. Resultados: Los datos muestran que en general la pornografía provoca los mayores niveles de interferencia atencional, aunque hay un efecto diferencial en función del sexo, siendo las series de televisión el contenido más interfiriente en las mujeres. Por otro lado, se observan asociaciones entre los tiempos de reacción ante los diferentes contenidos y la conducta sexual, tanto online como offline, así y como, con rasgos como la impulsividad, la búsqueda de sensaciones y la afectividad. Discusión: Este estudio ha demostrado la capacidad de diferentes contenidos multimedia (entre ellos, la pornografía) para atraer y consumir recursos atencionales, y la relación existente entre la interferencia atencional y los factores que participan en su potencial adictivo. Por lo tanto, resulta esencial realizar nuevas aproximaciones clínicas que den importancia a este aspecto en los diferentes niveles del proceso terapéutico.
