Instruments masculinitzats i feminitzats: la perpetuació del patriarcat musical

Abstract

La relació entre els estereotips de gènere i l’elecció d’instrument musical ha sigut estudiada des de finals dels anys 70 (Abeles i Porter, 1978; Delzell i Leppla, 1992). Els estereotips de gènere son un punt bàsic a la investigació feminista perquè tenen un paper molt important a la socialització de l’individu (González 1999) i en la construcció de la identitat de gènere. Preteniem detectar diferències de sexe/gènere en l’elecció d’instrument musical i en altres variables associades a la pràctica musical. El sexe era la variable independent, i es comparava amb la resta de variables dependents. A la primera part de la investigació vam obtindre les plantilles d’una mostra de bandes musicals (14 bandes, n=783). A la segona part, vam elaborar un qüestionari ad hoc per a estudiants de música (n=125). En tots els casos vam utilitzar l’anàlisi Khi-Quadrat. Els resultats en la primera mostra manifesten que les xiques tendeixen a tocar instruments de vent fusta i els xics tendeixen a tocar vent metall i percussió (χ2(3)=196,294, p<0.000). El mateix patró s’ha repetit a la segona mostra (χ2(4)=22,891, p<0.000). Amb les altres variables, s’ha observat que toquen instruments secundaris per igual, però segueixen patrons estereotipats (χ2(2)=5,114, p<0.078). No s’han trobat diferències en la percepció subjectiva dels factors que condicionen l’elecció d’instrument. S’ha vist que els xics tendeixen a tocar en agrupacions extra acadèmiques més que les xiques (χ2(1)=7,913, p<0,005). Xiques i xics també difereixen en les seues aspiracions laborals (χ2(2)=6,772, p<0,034). Concloem que el patriarcat musical, junt amb els estereotips, està en la base del fenomen dels instruments masculinitzats i feminitzats i sustenta la desigualtat entre dones i homes als espais i a les tasques musicals. És imprescindible investigar per elaborar estratègies òptimes d’acció i així conseguir un model de socialització inclusiu que no naturalitze les diferències.

The relation betwen gender stereotypes and the election of musical instrument has been studied since the end of the 70s (Abeles i Porter, 1978; Delzell i Leppla, 1992). The gender stereotypes are a basic point in feminist investigation because they have a very important paper in the socialization of the individual (González, 1999) and in the construction of the gender identity. We pretended to detect sex/gender differences in the election of musical instrument and in other variables associated to musical practice. The sex was the independent variable and it was compared with the other dependent variables. In the first part of the investigation, we obtained the personnel of a sample of musical bands (14 bands, n=783). In the second part, we developed an ad hoc questionnaire for music students (n=125). In all the cases we used the Chi- Square analysis. The results in the first sample showed that girls tend to play woodwing instruments and boys tend to play brass instruments and percussion (χ2(3)=196,294, p< 0.000). The same pattern was repeated in the second sample (χ2(4)=22,891, p< 0.000). With the other variables, we observed that boys and girls play secondary instruments equaly, but they reproduce stereotyped patterns (χ2(2)=5,114, p< 0.078). There’s no difference in the subjective perception of the factors that condition the instrument election. We saw that boys tend to play in extra-academic groups more than girls (χ2(1)=7,913, p<0,005). Girls and boys also differ in their work aspirations (χ2(2) = 6,772, p<0,034). We conclued that musical patriarchy and the estereotypes are in the base of the masculinised and feminised instruments and it support the inequality between women and men in different spaces and musical tasks. It is indispensable to investigate and develop optimum actions and strategies to get an a inclusive socialization model to overthorw the naturalize of the differences.
