La dramaturgia modernista de Jacinto Benavente en su obra Teatro fantástico,
iniciada en su primera edición de 1892, supuso un revulsivo en la escena española, dominada
por José de Echegaray y su escuela. Esta concepción vanguardista de Benavente,
alejada de la que posteriormente va a ser su trayectoria teatral, recoge la influencia
del teatro innovador europeo. Este trabajo sitúa el inicio del teatro modernista
